Gowanus Open Studios: October 17 – 18, 2015

I will be participating in the Gowanus Open Studio Tour, October 17-18, 12 to 6 pm, in a borrowed space at 301 Douglass St., Brooklyn, NY 11217 (between 3rd and 4th Avenues). It is only a few blocks north of the Union Street stop of the R train.

I will be showing a lot of new work, in addition to your old Holga favorites. Over the past year I have expanded on my “People Walking” series and have started a theme of ground pictures…. which includes “Street Abstractions” (abstract images of the ground, painterly in nature), and “Nature Out of Context”, which is close-ups of leaves and such on the sidewalk.

I have also been posting these types of pictures on Instagram (instagram.com/susanbowenfoto) on an almost daily basis.

It is a bit hard to find me on the online map (below is a detail). If walking up Douglass from 4th Avenue, I’m on the right 3/4 of the way up the block towards 3rd Avenue (just shy of the Brooklyn Music Factory and Gowanus Arts banners). I’m on the ground floor just inside the garage door.

Union Street and the R train are 2 blocks south of the detail shown. The streets go Union, Sackett, Degraw, Douglass. Hope to see you there!

Finalist for Critical Mass 2015

I am happy to announce I have been selected as a finalist for Critical Mass 2015, an international competition organized by Photolucida. The 200 jurors will select the top 50 this month. Awards are a possibility, but the main benefit is exposure. Wish me luck!

Update: I wasn’t selected for the final 50, but it was an honor to have been a finalist.

I’m on a Billboard in Los Angeles!
April 25 – May 15, 2015

I’m on a billboard! My piece ‘Skateboard Park, Arms Up’ is being included in a public art exhibition on billboards in Los Angeles sponsored by a non-profit organization called The Billboard Creative.

This is the image used on my billboard:

And below is a picture from Chris Danes!

From the Billboard Creative website:

“This is the inaugural show from The Billboard Creative, a non-profit founded in 2014 with the goals of giving artists access to a mass audience and to make art as accessible to Angelenos as the numerous billboards that they view every day. Pieces from 14 artists from seven countries and working in a range of media will be on display throughout Hollywood and LA through May 15. Download a map to the billboards, including QR codes for Google Maps for each installation – then hit the road on your own art tour or simply keep your eyes open on your daily journeys.”

Here is a link to the map of all the artist’s billboards: Billboard Creative Map. The billboards will be up April 25 – May 15. Mine is on the corner of West 3rd St. and South Serrano Avenue.

Slideshow with Street Sounds
Times Square, Winter 2015

This is a slide show in video format. The sounds were recorded at Times Square on Friday, March 20, 2015. The images are from February and March… during a record-breaking cold winter here in NYC. This is my first experience as a “sound engineer”! Subject-wise this is a continuation of my “people walking” theme.

The images were shot with me moving towards my subject as they move towards me. Technically that is a bit tricky. I shoot with most automatic features turned off (to make the camera maximally responsive), and I pre-focus the camera. I shoot too fast to really compose or to know what I’m getting; I have auto review turned off. So I’m carrying over the chance and surprise aspects of my Holga work to my newer digital way of working.

The video is 2 minutes long. I hope you enjoy it.

Gallery-wide show on the topic of the NYC Subways. My show is called ‘Transit Transitions’.

From the artist statement: “I was drawn to NYC by the fast pace of a city always in motion. I love riding the subways. My work is about motion; trains and people coming and going are good subjects for my overlapping panorama technique. Using a plastic camera, the long images are created by only partially advancing the film; the overlapping occurs in the film itself. These mostly unplanned juxtapositions capture my experience and at the same time have an identity all their own.”

Book: People Walking

Heh, everyone…. this is my first attempt at a book. Now that I’m shooting digitally and working with normal proportioned images such things are possible! I just quickly put it together, but maybe you will get an idea of what I’m up to these days.

All the pictures were shot in April 2013.

Below is the live Blurb website. The book can be viewed and purchased from this site.
