Plastics: A Group Show

Iceland Interior, Laura Miller

Nelson Hancock Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Plastics,” a group show featuring photographic works shot with plastic cameras. Running counter to the increasingly high tech developments in photography, the works in “Plastics” suggest dreams or memories and generate their power from the spaces of distortion and unreality created by the plastic lenses.

Plastic cameras (not to be confused with disposables) are beloved by all types of photographers. Most of the work in this show was made with Holga cameras, but other popular brands include Diana, Lomo, Lubitel and Seagull. Artists often turn to plastics precisely because they are somewhat unpredictable and do not offer the reliable fidelity, of color and shape, afforded by more sophisticated equipment.

Featured artists include: Susan Bowen, Robert Buchalo, Jochen Hartmann, Laura Miller and Michael Piazza.
